Day 4 IJmuiden to Hoeke of Holland

Tuesday June 13th
Plan of the cycle paths. Bewildering!
Leisurely breakfast stop

Now the real trip starts.

No deadlines no plans.

Potter about on Holland's super flat "fietspad" (dedicated numbered cycle paths.)

It began well - bikes were first off the boat. Result!

Getting out of IJmuiden was a bit difficult but I was able to follow signs to the LF 1 the main coastal bike path south.

I had a lovely first day eventually finding a camp site 3kms from Hoeke of Holland.

The signs to Dutch campsites are very discrete.

They like to keep them to themselves. I found a sign camping 200m and I still couldn't find the campsite.

I was forced to stop at a bar for a beer  (what a hardship) to find where it was.

The other peculiarly Dutch thing is that they eat very early. I returned to the bar after the tent was up at 8pm. I was told the chef had gone home half an hour  before. They did still have beer!

I never yet saw a soul in reception at the site which closed at 17.00 and opened at 09.00.
Dunes as far as the eye can see

On the site I met a fellow touring cyclist Peter from Cologne in Germany who offered to guide me to the ferry using his all singing and dancing cycle specific GPS in the morning and cycle with me most of the day.

I was wary at first but we left the site by 08.30 and we were reasonably evenly matched for load and speed.

We got along fine but I am sure that we were equally glad to be left to our own devices when he turned of towards Bergen Op Zoom.
